5. Lower than angels
By Pastor Chris Martin     Oct 26, 2014
Heb 2:9

Lower Than Angels

Hebrews 2:5-18

Heb. 2:5

Angels are not in charge

Reference to the future age when Jesus will return and reign on earth for 1000 years. Jesus will be ruling, not the angels. We will rule with Jesus (Rev. 20:6)

Heb. 2:6-9 references Psalm 8

Heb. 2:6

We are nothing as people, but God takes notice of us.

God became low, a man, to redeem us.

Heb. 2:7

Psalmist references mankind, but the author of Hebrews sees it as Messianic and pointing to Jesus.

For a little while, Jesus was lower than angels in that he come from heaven to earth to redeem us.

Heb. 2:8

Now everything is under his feet (Gen. 3:15, Phil. 2:9)

All is subjected to Jesus; we just don't see it yet.

Heb. 2:9

BUT we DO see Jesus

He made himself low to die and redeem us to himself.

This gift is for everyone!

Heb. 2:10-16

He is captain of our salvation.

Jesus is not ashamed to call us brother -- it's a deep, intimate relationship.

References to Ps. 22 and Is. 8

Jesus has destroyed the devil and we shouldn't fear him.

We can be free of the fear of death. (Gal. 2)

Heb. 2:17

Christ became like us in all ways

He serves as our high priest. We can go straight to him rather than through a person or saints.

He is our propitiation (satisfaction of the wrath of God on sin). 1 John 2

Heb. 2:18

Jesus was also tempted. He understands our needs and lives.
